Encrypted iCloud backup
A backup you have never restored is a hope, not a backup.
In short
Latent backs up each vault to your own iCloud account, encrypted on your iPhone before it leaves. Neither Apple nor Latent can read it. Backup is on by default, its status is always visible, and a built-in test lets you check that a restore actually works.
Key takeaways
- Encrypted before upload: iCloud only ever stores ciphertext.
- On by default, status always visible.
- Restore on a new iPhone with your recovery phrase.
Why backup is on by default
The most common way people lose private photos is not a hacker. It is a lost, broken or replaced phone with a vault that was never backed up. A vault app that leaves backup off by default protects your files from everyone, including you.
Who can read the backup
Nobody but you. Files are encrypted on your iPhone with keys that never leave it unprotected, then stored in your iCloud. Apple stores data it cannot read; Latent has no server and never sees it at all.

Restored with your phrase
Restoring on a new iPhone
- Install Latent on the new iPhone, signed in to the same iCloud account.
- Choose to restore a vault.
- Enter the nine-word recovery phrase of that vault.
The restore test
Latent includes a restore test that checks your backup can actually be decrypted with your phrase — before the day you need it, rather than on it.
