Several vaults, one open at a time

What is not open is not announced.

1 min readLast reviewed

In short

Latent can hold several vaults, each with its own pattern and its own keys. Drawing a pattern opens the vault it belongs to and only that one. There is no list of vaults anywhere in the app, so opening one reveals nothing about whether others exist.

Key takeaways

  • Independent keys: one vault cannot open another.
  • No visible list of vaults.
  • A wrong pattern produces a neutral message that reveals nothing.

Why separate vaults instead of folders

A folder is a way to sort things. A vault is a way to separate who can see them. Holiday photos you are happy to show and documents you are not should not open with the same gesture.

Why there is no list

A list of vaults is information in itself. Showing “3 vaults” to someone looking over your shoulder tells them there are two they have not seen. Latent shows only the vault that matches the pattern drawn.

Vault A

Pattern B

Vault B

No list of vaults, anywhere

Each pattern opens one vault. Nothing on screen shows how many vaults exist.

What a wrong pattern shows

Nothing useful. The message is the same whether the pattern belongs to no vault or to a vault that exists, so trying patterns teaches an onlooker nothing.

What this is not

Latent 1.0 does not offer decoy vaults or a duress code that opens a fake vault under pressure. Separate vaults with no visible list are a different, simpler guarantee: each one is private to whoever knows its pattern.
