Delete photos from iPhone but keep them in iCloud

With iCloud Photos, there is no “delete on this iPhone only” button. Here is what works instead.

In short

Not while iCloud Photos is syncing: a photo deleted on your iPhone is deleted from iCloud and from every other device, after 30 days in Recently Deleted. To free space, keep Optimize iPhone Storage on. To keep photos in iCloud but off this iPhone, first turn off Sync this iPhone and choose Remove from iPhone — the iPhone then stops syncing photos altogether.

Key takeaways

  • With iCloud Photos on, a deletion reaches every device.
  • Optimize iPhone Storage frees space without deleting anything.
  • Turning off sync keeps iCloud intact but stops new uploads.

Why deletions sync

iCloud Photos keeps one library across all your devices, and a change on one is reflected on the others — deletions included. A photo you delete on the iPhone goes to Recently Deleted for 30 days, then disappears from iCloud and from every device using the same library.

If what you need is space: Optimize Storage

Most people asking this want room on their iPhone. Optimize iPhone Storage keeps the full-resolution originals in iCloud and space-saving versions on the iPhone. It is on by default; check it in Settings › [your name] › iCloud › Photos, under iPhone Storage on the latest iOS. Nothing is deleted: the original downloads when you need it.

If you want photos off this iPhone only

Stop syncing first, then remove. Once iCloud Photos is off on a device, uploads, edits and deletions no longer sync between it and your other devices.

  1. Go to Settings › [your name] › iCloud › Photos.
  2. Turn off Sync this iPhone.
  3. Choose Remove from iPhone to remove the iCloud photos without keeping a copy on the device — or Download Photos & Videos if you want to keep one.

The library stays in iCloud and on your other devices. The cost is real: new photos taken on this iPhone are no longer uploaded to iCloud, so they exist only on the phone unless you back them up another way.

If you want a copy you control: export first

Another route is to make a separate copy before deleting: import the photos to a Mac or PC, or copy them to an external drive. Then delete them from the library, knowing that the deletion still reaches iCloud and every device, and that the copy on your computer is now the only one.

What about iCloud.com?

iCloud.com shows the same library as your devices, so deleting a photo there deletes it everywhere too. If Advanced Data Protection is on, web access to your iCloud data is turned off unless you turn it back on.

When the reason is privacy

Removing photos from the iPhone while they stay in iCloud doesn’t make them private: they remain on every device signed in to your Apple Account. Moving them into a vault and then emptying Recently Deleted takes them out of the library everywhere. Latent can delete the originals when it imports from Photos, and reminds you to empty Recently Deleted afterwards.
