Family sharing one Apple Account? Why photos show up everywhere
One Apple Account means one photo library — on every phone, iPad and Mac.
In short
iCloud Photos keeps one library up to date on every device signed in to the same Apple Account, so a shared account means everyone sees, and can delete, everyone’s photos. Apple recommends that each person uses their own Apple Account and joins a Family Sharing group instead. Purchases and iCloud+ storage can still be shared, while each person’s photos stay private.
Key takeaways
- Same Apple Account, same photo library, on every device.
- A deletion on one device deletes the photo everywhere.
- Family Sharing shares purchases and storage, not photos.
Why it happens
iCloud Photos stores every photo and video in iCloud and keeps the library the same on every device signed in with the same Apple Account. That is what it is designed to do. When a whole family signs in with one account, a teenager’s photos land on a parent’s Mac, a parent’s screenshots appear on a child’s iPad, and anyone can delete something for everyone.
Photos are only part of it. Apple warns that on a shared account, messages and voicemails meant for one person can reach another, call history mixes, and if Family Sharing is ever stopped, the account owner keeps all the purchases.
The fix: one Apple Account each, plus Family Sharing
- Before anyone moves, make sure the photos each person wants to keep are saved somewhere they’ll still have access to.
- On the family member’s device, sign out of the shared Apple Account.
- Have them create their own Apple Account. A child under 13 needs a Child Account.
- They sign in with the new account on their device.
- The organizer sets up Family Sharing and invites them, then turns on Purchase Sharing.
What you can still share
- Purchases and subscriptions, through Family Sharing.
- One iCloud+ plan with up to five other family members — each person’s photos and documents stay private to their own account.
- Family photos you want everyone to have, through an iCloud Shared Photo Library or shared albums.
Private photos in the meantime
Moving a family to separate accounts can take a weekend. Until it is done, anything in the shared library is visible on every device signed in to it, including the Hidden album to anyone who can unlock one of them. A vault like Latent doesn’t depend on the Apple Account at all: it opens with its own pattern, and its iCloud backup is encrypted before it is uploaded.
