iPhone screenshots and privacy: where they go and how to clean up

A screenshot copies whatever was on screen into your photo library, and from there to every device.

In short

iPhone screenshots are saved to your photo library in the Photos app; you find them under Collections › Media Types › Screenshots. With iCloud Photos they sync to your other devices like any photo, and deleting one moves it to Recently Deleted for 30 days. To clean up, open the Screenshots collection, select what you no longer need, delete it, then empty Recently Deleted.

Key takeaways

  • Screenshots go to your photo library and sync with iCloud Photos.
  • Find them all in Collections › Media Types › Screenshots.
  • Delete, then empty Recently Deleted, to remove them for good.

What a screenshot captures

Everything visible at that moment: the message you meant to save, but also a notification banner that slid in, the name of the person you were chatting with, a balance, a one-time code, an address. People screenshot tickets, bank details, ID documents and confirmation codes — and then forget they exist.

Where screenshots go

  • To your photo library in the Photos app, by default.
  • Grouped automatically under Collections › Media Types › Screenshots.
  • With iCloud Photos, to iCloud and to every device that uses the same library.
  • A full-page screenshot (of a whole webpage, for instance) can instead be saved as a PDF to the Files app, with Save PDF to Files.

Save fewer of them

When a screenshot opens with its editing tools, you can crop it to the part you need, share it, or cancel and delete it without keeping it. Apple’s guide notes that screenshots shown as small thumbnails in the corner save automatically; when the screenshot opens full screen, you choose whether to save it. The screen capture settings let you choose which of these behaviours you get.

  • Crop before saving, so the notification bar and unrelated content are gone.
  • Share directly from the editing view, then delete, if you only needed to send it.
  • Never screenshot a password, a recovery phrase or a recovery key. A screenshot is exactly the kind of copy that syncs everywhere.

Clean up old screenshots

  1. Open Photos, tap Collections, scroll to Media Types and tap Screenshots.
  2. Tap Select, then choose the screenshots you don’t need.
  3. Tap the Delete button.
  4. Go to Collections › Utilities › Recently Deleted, unlock it, and delete them there too.

Deleted screenshots otherwise stay in Recently Deleted for 30 days, on every device using the same iCloud Photos library.

Screenshots you need to keep

Some screenshots are worth keeping but not worth leaving in the camera roll: a booking reference, a document, proof of a payment. Latent can import them from your photo library into an encrypted vault and remind you to empty Recently Deleted afterwards. For paper documents, its secure camera captures straight into the vault, so no copy ever lands in Photos.
