Hiding surprise gift photos from your family on iPhone

The quickest way to spoil a surprise is a shared photo library.

In short

If you use iCloud Shared Photo Library, make sure Camera isn’t sharing automatically and keep gift photos in your personal library. If a family Mac or iPad is signed in to your Apple Account, your library — hidden photos included — syncs there too. Hide the photos, keep them off shared devices, or keep them in a separate vault.

Key takeaways

  • Shared Library can add photos automatically at home or near family.
  • Shared library photos appear in everyone’s Memories and Photos widget.
  • Hidden photos still sync to every device on your Apple Account.

Where a surprise leaks

  • A shared library. With automatic sharing on, photos you take at home or near other participants can go straight into the iCloud Shared Photo Library — and into everyone’s memories, featured photos and Photos widget.
  • Shared Library Suggestions, which proposes photos you might want to add.
  • A shared device. A family Mac or iPad signed in to your Apple Account with iCloud Photos on shows your library, including what you photographed this morning.
  • Messages. Photos sent to you in Messages — a shop’s photo, a picture from someone in on the secret — can be saved to your library automatically.

Before you photograph the gift

  1. In Camera, check the Shared Library button at the top of the screen and make sure you are saving to your personal library. That is the default, but it is easy to switch.
  2. To be safe until the day, turn sharing from Camera off in Settings › Apps › Photos › Shared Library › Sharing from Camera.
  3. If you prefer to keep it on, turn off Share When At Home: in Photos, tap Collections, tap your account in the top-right corner, then Shared Library › Sharing from Camera.
  4. In the same Shared Library screen, you can turn off Shared Library Suggestions.

After you take it

  • If a photo went into the shared library by mistake, open it, tap the More button and choose Move to Personal Library. Anyone who looked in the meantime may already have seen it.
  • Hide it. Hidden photos appear only in the Hidden collection, which is locked by default — but it opens with the passcode of any device signed in to your account.
  • To stop Messages saving received photos to your library, go to Settings › Apps › Messages › Shared with You and turn off Photos.
  • After the day, delete what you no longer need, and delete it again from Recently Deleted.

On a family Mac

If the family Mac is signed in to your Apple Account with iCloud Photos on, your hidden photos are there too, behind the Mac’s password or Touch ID. If that Mac shouldn’t show your library at all, see why your photos appear on a family Mac and how to stop it.

A vault for the planning

Gift photos, receipts and screenshots of an order are exactly what Latent keeps out of Photos. The secure camera saves them straight into an encrypted vault that never reaches a shared library, Memories or a family Mac. Latent 1.0 keeps vaults on your iPhone, with an encrypted backup in your iCloud, and does not sync them to other devices.
