Medical photos on iPhone: keeping them out of your camera roll

A photo meant for your doctor shouldn’t resurface in your camera roll months later.

In short

A photo taken with the Camera app goes into your library, syncs with iCloud Photos and becomes part of what Photos draws on for featured photos and Memories. For medical photos, scan documents into Notes instead, hide or delete photos once they are sent, empty Recently Deleted — or capture them straight into an encrypted vault so they never reach the library.

Key takeaways

  • Hidden photos leave the library view but still sync with iCloud Photos.
  • Notes can’t lock a note that contains a scanned PDF.
  • Deleted photos stay in Recently Deleted for 30 days.

Where a symptom photo goes by default

  • Into your library, next to everything else — and, with iCloud Photos on, onto every device signed in to your Apple Account.
  • Into the pool Photos draws on for Memories, featured photos and the Photos widget.
  • Into a shared library, if you use iCloud Shared Photo Library and Camera shares automatically at home or when other participants are nearby.
  • Into Utilities, where Photos groups images by content — identity documents, receipts, handwriting — so a prescription or a letter can be easy to find.

Better for documents: scan them

For prescriptions, test results and letters, a scan beats a photo. In Notes, open a note and choose Scan Documents; the scan is saved as a PDF inside the note, not in Photos.

One limit: Apple says you can’t lock notes with PDF attachments, so a scanned document in Notes is protected only by the phone’s own lock.

If you already took the photo

  1. Send it through the channel your clinic expects — a patient portal or secure messaging, if it offers one.
  2. If you still need it, hide it: tap the More button, then Hide. The Hidden collection is locked with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode by default.
  3. If it went into a shared library, open it, tap the More button and choose Move to Personal Library.
  4. Once it is no longer needed, delete it, then delete it again from Recently Deleted, where it would otherwise stay for 30 days.

Capturing straight into a vault

Latent’s secure camera saves the photo directly into an encrypted vault. It never appears in Photos, iCloud Photos or Recently Deleted, and the vault opens with its own pattern. Tags such as “Dermatology” are encrypted with the file, and when the doctor needs the photo, you share it from the vault.
